Environmental Engineer

 

Environmental engineers develop solutions to environmental problems using the principles of biology and chemistry. hey are involved in water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues.

Environmental engineers perform a variety of duties:

  • conduct hazardous-waste management studies
  • advise on treatment and containment of hazardous waste
  • develop regulations
  • design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems
  • conduct research on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects
  • analyze scientific data
  • perform quality-control checks

Environmental engineers are concerned with local and worldwide environmental issues. They study and attempt to minimize the effects of acid rain, global warming, automobile emissions, and ozone depletion. They may also be involved in the protection of wildlife.

Many environmental engineers work as consultants, helping their clients to comply with regulations, to prevent environmental damage, and to clean up hazardous sites.



How long will it take?

35 - 42 semester hours. That's three to four semesters in Amarillo College's Safety & Environmental Technology (SET) program.

How much will you earn?

Entry level technicians can expect $23,000 to $35,000 per year. With experience obtained on-the-job, salaries can extend to up to $45,000 per year.
