Administrative Assistant, Executive Secretary

 

Office automation and organizational restructuring have led administrative assistants and executive secretaries to assume responsibilities once reserved for managerial and professional staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • coordinating an office’s administrative activities
  • storing, retrieving and integrating information for dissemination to staff
  • managing information and communication
  • planning and scheduling meetings and appointments
  • organizing and maintaining paper and electronic files

Administrative assistants and executive secretaries may also manage projects, conduct research and handle travel arrangements.

Executive secretaries and administrative assistants provide high-level administrative support for an office and for top executives of an organization.



How long will it take?

High school graduates who have basic office skills may qualify for entry-level positions. They can acquire these skills by completing an office administration program at a community college. AC offers this program and you can complete it in two years or less.

How much will you earn?

Median annual earnings of executive secretaries and administrative assistants were $37,240 in May 2006. Salaries vary a great deal, reflecting differences in skill, experience and level of responsibility.

Executive secretaries and administrative assistants are employed in organizations of every type. They usually work in schools, hospitals, corporate settings, government agencies or legal and medical offices.
