Nursing

Amarillo College's qualified academic and clinical nursing faculty is available to serve as expert resources as you pursue your chosen nursing educational pathway. The majority of nursing classes are held in mediated classrooms and many are web-enhanced. Several courses are online.

All nursing classes are supplemented by a state-of-the-art Nursing Resource Center, a Computer Testing Center and a West Library research center. Clinical experiences are held at local hospitals, nursing homes, health clinics and schools throughout the community. Nursing courses are taken in sequence according to specific degree plans.

The Amarillo College Nursing Division offers three unique nursing career pathways to explore.

Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) is increasing enrollment by 25 spaces for the Fall 2008 semester. The ADN program offers a career as a Registered Nurse (RN). Students completing the ADN curriculum are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Vocational Nursing (VN) offers a career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in a one-year certification program. Students completing the VN curriculum are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as a Vocational Nurse. Graduates function as beginning practitioners in many different health care agencies including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, public schools and nursing homes.

The LVN to RN Advanced Placement Option is a career path that allows Texas Licensed Vocational Nurses to receive advanced placement into the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Applicants must have an unencumbered Texas license, be active in nursing within the past four years and meet all requirements for admission to Amarillo College and the Associate Degree Program.
