Electrician

 

Electricians bring electricity into homes and businesses. They install and maintain the wiring, fuses and other components through which electricity flows.

Electricians usually start their work by reading blueprints that show the locations of circuits, outlets, load centers, panel boards and other equipment. They connect all types of wires to circuit breakers, transformers, outlets or other components, the use various testing equipment to make sure the connections are safe.

To ensure public safety, electricians follow the National Electrical Code, and State and local building codes.



How long will it take?

Most electricians learn their trade through apprenticeship programs. These programs combine paid on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. Classroom instruction can begin at Amarillo College. Apprenticeship programs usually last 4 years.

How much can you earn?

In 2007, the median salary for electricians ranged from $16.00 to nearly $28.00 per hour.

Where can you work?

Most electricians work in the construction industry; others are self-employed or work in other industries.
