Truck DrivingThe Transportation Industry is growing and there is a high demand for well-trained drivers. This six-week course utilizes state-of-the-art simulator training, classroom instruction, range and road driving, and practical application of skills used in the operation of a tractor/trailer.

  1. Student must be 18 years of age at the commencement of the course
  2. Student must have a current valid Texas Drivers License
  3. Student must have in possession first day of class a valid original Social Security Card if applying for the hazardous materials endorsement       
  4. Texas Department of Public Safety fees for Commercial Drivers License and permit are included in tuition. 
  5. Student will be required to take a DOT physical and drug screen on the first day of class. Cost of the physical and drug screen is included.


Students completing the course will have a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL). To obtain a Certificate of Completion, the student must pass all Texas Department of Public Safety requirements for a Class A Commercial Drivers License issued by the State of Texas and miss no more than 2 days of class. Upon completion of the course, the student will be qualified to secure an entry-level job as a CDL driver. Amarillo College is not an employment agency, nor do we guarantee the Texas Department of Public Safety will issue a license. However, students will have ample opportunity and help to talk with visiting recruiters, apply for employment, and pass DPS testing. Students may apply at any campus, or at the Truck Driving Academy, East Campus Logistics Training Center, Room 500.

Tuition and Fees (DOT physical examination, drug screen and driver license costs are included in the fees)

Please note that the HAZMAT background check is an additional charge and is not included in the fees.

Job Outlook

Employment for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is projected to grow 21 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. As the economy grows, the demand for goods will increase, and more truck drivers will be needed to keep supply chains moving.
